Now on with the comics…
Unstoppable Doom Patrol
Issue 5
DC Comics
Script – Dennis Culver
Art – Chris Burnham
Colours – Brian Reber
Letters – Pat Brosseau

WHO IS METAWOMAN? The World’s Strangest Superheroes versus Anytown, USA! Just as everyone feared, the Doom Patrol have lost control and are now attacking the idyllic small town of New Poplar, Illinois. As these unstoppable monsters rampage, a new superhero must rise to stop them…enter Metawoman! But who is she, and what is her terrible secret? Only one person has the answers: the team’s former chief, Dr. Niles Caulder!
I had a hard time picking the comic of the week this week. In the end it came down to my love of the characters and the desire to see their series do well enough that we might see more from them. Unstoppable Doom Patrol, whilst in the main DC universe this time, has still managed to bring it’s signature weirdness with it. This series has been a great addition to their legacy and I hope DC have plans to bring the team back for more soon.
Teenage. Mutant Ninja Turtles x Stranger Things
Issue 2
IDW Publishing/Dark Horse Comics
Script – Cameron Chittock
Art – Fero Peniche
Colours – Sophie Dodgson
Letters – Rus Wooton
Buy digitally on Comixology – TMNT x Stranger Things #2 (Link)
Escape from TCRI! With Eleven in the grasp of Baxter Stockman, it’s up to Raphael and Donatello to devise a plan to bust her out before her powers can be used by the evil genius. Meanwhile, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Will, Lucas, and Dustin brave the depths of the NYC subway system, getting closer to a portal to the Upside Down that’s been unleashing Demogorgons into the tunnels. And what they’ll find on the other side is something not even NYC has seen before.
Somehow they made it work, the worlds of Hawkings and the Turtles have merged seamlessly. The first issue was a blast and the way the two sets of characters have interacted has been spot on. I really love the Secret of the Ooze homage on this cover.
Star Trek
Issue 11
IDW Publishing
Script – Jackson Lanzing and Colin Kelly
Art – Angel Unzueta
Buy digitally on Comixology – Star Trek #11 (Link)
“Day of Blood,” Chapter Three! Only emissary Sisko and his crew of Starfleet’s finest and disgraced ambassador Worf and his band of insurgents can save the universe. But they are divided in every sense of the word… In space, Lieutenants Paris and Torres fight over control of the Defiant while Spock and Scotty do everything they can to keep the Theseus from being cleaved in two. On the ground, Ro and Sela have given up hope, and siblings Data and Lore can’t see eye to eye-all while their captains resist the urge to tear each other apart. Can they defeat Kahless and his Red Path when they cannot overcome their own differences?
This crossover has really raised the stakes. This and Defiant are some of the best Trek comics we’ve had in a long time. I can’t recommend these books enough.
Planet of the Apes
Issue 5
Marvel Comics
Script – David F. Walker
Art – Dave Wachter
Colours – Bryan Valenza
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology – Planet of the Apes #5 (Link)
WHO WILL SURVIVE THE REVOLUTION? A revolution is brewing in the UK. As Pug’s traveling army of apes gains momentum, they set their sights on England. What results will be an explosive battle that will change the trajectory of the world as we know it! Meanwhile, Juliana and Omatete’s voyage to guide the apes to the CDC has hit a speed bump. Now separated into two groups, it’s anyone’s guess whether the apes will survive long enough to be humanity’s salvation.
I’ve enjoyed this first foray in to the world of POTA. I’d love to see Marvel explore the wider Apes history and maybe even do stories based round the original films.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue 32
Marvel Comics
Script – Zeb Wells with Jonathn Hickman
Art – Patrick Gleason
Colours – Marcio Menyz and Erick Arciniega
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology – The Amazing Spider-Man #32 (Link)
Two of Spider-Man’s villains are forming the deadliest team-up he’s ever had to face. But are they after Spidey? Or is he just in the way of something bigger? Patrick Gleason rejoins the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN crew for the darkest arc of ASM yet!
LEGACY #926
I knon, I know. I’m still hanging on in here. Patrick Gleason takes over art duties for this next story arc. so I thought I’d see what happens over the next few issues.
On the radar, some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:

Sláine Gets Hard(Cover) for 35th Anniversary
Sláine: The Horned God Anniversary Edition announced – oversized & with new scans!
A new edition of one of the most influential graphic novels ever – in incredible detail and at a scale never before seen! Sláine: The Horned God Anniversary Edition is coming in 2024.
Timed to coincide with the 35th anniversary of its first publication in 2000 AD in 1989, this new edition of Pat Mills and Simon Bisley’s groundbreaking and best-selling collection will feature brand new scans – meaning readers will be able to see its fully-painted art in unprecedented new detail.
Measuring 355mm by 270mm, the 208-page paperback Sláine: The Horned God Anniversary Edition will arrive in stores in May 2024.
Rebellion is also delighted to announce the Sláine: The Horned God Anniversary Edition Slipcase. Available exclusively through the 2000 AD webshop and also measuring 355mm by 270mm, this boxset will feature the three books of ‘The Horned God’ in separate hardcovers, housed in a stunning slipcase covered with Celtic motifs and the ’S’ from the original Sláine logo that featured in Pat Mills and artist Angie Kincaid’s first story in 1983.
This promises to be a unique collection: both editions will be produced using pages scanned from the original film, housed in the 2000 AD archive, and will also be printed at a size that more closely matches Bisley’s original artwork – giving readers the opportunity to see the greatest Sláine epic in unmatched detail.
Sláine at 40
‘The Horned God’ is the definitive Sláine storyline, its appearance in the pages of 2000 AD in three instalments between 1989 and 1990 marked a creative high-point for the comic, and the work inspired artists for generations with its incredible painted scenes of epic battles evoking the work of Frank Frazetta but in the medium of comic art.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary this summer, this heady mix of Celtic mythology, barbed anti-authoritarian politics, and extreme violence combined Mills’ fascinating characters and saga-like storytelling with Bisley’s incredible artwork. It sparked a revolution in sequential comic books and spawned a multitude of imitators – yet even after three and a half decades, their masterpiece is as fresh and startling as it was when it was first published as a weekly serial.
Sláine is a wandering warrior cast out from his tribe and wandering the mist-wreathed realm of Tír na nÓg, the ‘Land of the Young’, with his duplicitous dwarf, Ukko. This deluxe collector’s edition returns us to this ancient land, suffering under the dominion of the Drunes; strange druids who have poisoned the land with their magic. Sláine has had enough of their tyranny and, through the Earth Goddess, he learns some shocking truths about the priesthood and his own future. Now Sláine must unite the four kings of Tír na nÓg and use their mystical weapons as he and the Sessair tribe prepare for all-out war!
With brand new scans and in its oversized format, Sláine: The Horned God Anniversary Edition promises to bring one of comics’ greatest sagas to live in a way never before seen!
